Why do cakes cost so much?
When you are ordering a cake for that special occassion, keep in mind the time that the cake decorator is going to put into your special cake. Most cakes take hours to decorate and then you have to consider the time the decorator takes to make the cakes and icing. Plus, don't forget about their costs for the ingredients, supplies, transportation materials like boxes, and clean-up.

Lauren's First Communion
This was the first time I made this cake so let's just call it a "test" because I know that the next time I make it I 1) won't cross the letters, and 2) will get the gold to show up better. Working with gold isn't easy so I need to do my research. Overall it was still a beautiful cake.

Abby's 2nd Birthday- Pooh Cake
I LOVE to watch Ace of Cakes because whenever I see their cakes fall apart, I feel much more normal. You can't tell from the picture but Pooh had a little "junk in the trunk" if ya know what I mean and he started leaning backwards. I had to stick wooden dowel sticks through his head and then push those forward with a folded piece of cardboard. Also...see that little pond next to Pooh? That wasn't planned. I ran out of green icing! I was too tired to make more so I improvised. Now you know.

Shamu
We took the kids to Sea World in July and Lauren fell in love with Shamu. I was horrified when she said she wanted a Shamu birthday party...how on earth would I make a Shamu cake? I looked at some pictures online and became even more terrified when I realized I was going to have to make Shamu out of Rice Krispie Treats and FONDANT! The first time I used fondant was for Lauren's 2nd birthday and it just didn't go well so I haven't touched it since then. I never even posted the picture of that cake. I was nervous all the way up until Shamu was completely done. Lauren told me how she wanted the bottom cake decorated and she went with the decorations on the centerpiece.
Not too bad I have to say.
Family cake
This isn't anything special. I was in a major time crunch because my daughter's 5th birthday fell on the first day of school so on top of all the back-to-school hub bub, I was making her class some cupcakes and preparing for her party that weekend. I decided that we also had to do something on her actual birthday so I literally threw this one together.

Park Cake
I was so disappointed in myself on icing the cake. I really need to take some classes. The top of the cake was fine but I ran out at the bottom and tried to spread it out. Well, it was too thin and the next day I tried to add more and all that did was pull up the original icing. GRRR! So you see the bush and sandbox? Those were cover-ups. Also, I thought I had done half chocolate and half white before but apparently I was dreaming because the white cake rose much higher than the chocolate. AS a matter of fact, the chocolate cake was perfectly level. I didn't have the heart to shave some off of the white cake so the left side was slightly higher than the right. Double grrr! Otherwise I was very pleased with the cake.

A Special Cake for a Special Boy
We went to a big celebration today. It was a celebration for a little boy named Elias who just finished his last cancer treatment. When I heard that his mom was planning the big event, I offered to make the cake. Elias likes Super Heroes and he has even created his own, "Super E" and this is how he said he wanted his cake. I got a little worried when the RSVP list was up to 122 people. Altogether, this cake took me 9 hours. I have to say I'm a little sad about how uneven the icing looks in this picture but every time I tried to smooth it out, the cake started to come up. I need to practice. Also, I had this cake up super high so my kids wouldn't touch it, you should have seen me standing on a chair, hunched over to write the message.
If you want to learn more about Elias, click on his mom's blog. She hasn't had time to blog lately as you can imagine but I'm sure she'd love to hear from you. Or you can click on his Care Page for a full story on his roller coaster ride with cancer. Also, if you can support their financial bills, they would be so grateful.

Aidan's 1st birthday cake
I was so proud of this cake. We made it in Aggieland and transported it all the way to Mansfield with no problems. Once we got to Mandy's house, Stephen took it out of the car and tripped over the curb. His thumb went right in. You can see the smudge next to the candle. Other than that, it turned out great!
